What’s the Problem with the Soothe and Glow Seahorse?
The Soothe & Glow Seahorse, which is a top seller for toddlers on Amazon, has recently been linked to a significant risk of burn injuries. According to Denver News CALL7 Investigator Kelli Rabon, who broke the story on February 28, 2014, a number of parents who inspected the Fisher Price Seahorse found that the toy’s battery compartments were burned, or had batteries that leaked. As a result of these problems, parents around the country are taking a closer look at their children’s toys.
CALL7 attempted to contact Fisher Price a number of times since the story broke, but the company did not respond. Phone calls and e-mail messages were met with the statement that “a very small percentage of consumers … have experienced an issue with this product” but had no comment on what caused the problem, or what it was going to do to remedy the situation.
When responding to queries from concerned parents online, Fisher Price wrote, “In the products that have been returned to us, we have no confirmed reports of a fire” and “We’d never do anything to compromise children’s safety.”
Why Hasn’t Fisher Price Recalled the Soothe & Glow Seahorse?
Fisher Price’s refusal to provide more details to the public has left many wondering what has to happen before the company issues a recall. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), companies are required to report any complaints about products that represent a “substantial hazard” to the public, but that the company itself ultimately decides what it considers “substantial.” Since the story broke, the CPSC has stated that while it is aware of complaints involving the Soothe & Glow Seahorse, it can neither confirm nor deny any investigation into the matter.
