December 21, 2010 – According to a New York Times article, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly voted today to grant the FDA new authority over food production by passing a much anticipated new set of food safety laws.
Prompted by a number of serious food poisoning outbreaks in recent years, the new bill is designed to shift the FDA’s focus toward prevention of foodborne illnesses rather than reacting to outbreaks already in progress.
Under the new legislation, the FDA will have the power to order food recalls, and will be conducting more frequent and thorough inspections around the country. The law will also give the administration the power to set uniform laws for growing and harvesting crops, with the goal of lowering the risk of food contamination.
“The food and beverage industry is committed to partnering with Congress, the administration and the F.D.A. to strengthen and modernize our nation’s food safety system,” the Grocery Manufacturers Association said in a statement praising the bill’s passage.
