What’s the Problem?
February 22, 2017 – In a motion to transfer (PDF) filed earlier this month with the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML), plaintiffs requested that all federal lawsuits filed over injuries alleged from Farxiga be centralized for pretrial handling in the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Multidistrict litigations are common in pharmaceutical litigation where a large number of lawsuits are filed alleging similar injuries from the same medication. Consolidation is intended to reduce duplicative discovery, avoid conflicting rulings by different judges, and to expedite the litigation process for all parties.
Farxiga is used to control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of medications called SGLT2 inhibitors that work by increasing the removal of sugar from the kidneys. Farxiga was released in a partnership between Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca, and approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on January 8, 2014.
In December 2015, FDA issued a Drug Safety Communication stating that SGLT2 inhibitor diabetes drugs had been linked to reports of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening condition that occurs when cells in the body are unable to get the glucose they need for energy. The agency required information about the DKA risk to be added to the labeling of all SGLT2 inhibitors, warning users to discontinue use and seek immediate medical attention if they notice symptoms of rising acid levels in the blood.
