What’s the problem?
While more conventional therapies such as radiation and chemotherapy are commonly used to treat mesothelioma, experimental techniques such as photodynamic, gene therapy, and alimta treatments are becoming more common (most often in clinical trials that test how effective such treatments might be in fighting asbestos-caused cancer).
- Photodynamic therapy – The principle of photodynamic therapy is to kill cancerous cells by affecting them with the energy of light in combination with surgery. During this therapy, the patient receives a special drug that gives cells the sensitivity to the light of a specific wavelength, called photosensitizer. This drug collects in the tumor cells, apart from healthy ones. After the cells get sensitized, they are subjected to the light of a correct frequency through fiber optic cables that are implanted into the body, mostly with open-chest surgery.
- Alimta treatment – Used in conjunction with platinum-based cisplatin (a more traditional chemotherapy drug), Alimta is the only chemotherapy drug approved by the FDA for the specific treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. A number of clinical trials involving a combination of Alimta and cisplatin / cisplatin derivatives (carboplatin and oxaliplatin) are ongoing.
- Gene therapy – By accessing the genetic code that predisposes some cells to become cancerous when exposed to asbestos, gene therapy attempts to understand why proteins within cells cause them to be resilient to cancer, while others do not. Gene therapy represents a revolution in mesothelioma treatment by replacing cancer-causing genes with genes medically engineered to die when exposed to cancerous growths.
