What’s the problem?
A ProPublica-CBS News investigation [1] has found that the Evenflo Big Kid Booster performed better with a full harness than with just the seat, which only has a shoulder restraint, and that the crash test dummy slipped out of the booster during at least 1 test.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children who weigh 40 pounds or less should not be placed in booster seats [2], and are safer in car seats that use harnesses to hold their small bodies in place.
Evenflo markets the Big Kid Booster as safe for children who weigh 30 pounds or more, claiming the boosters are “side-impact tested” without warning that children may be at an increased risk of serious injury.
House Subcommittee to Investigate Evenflo Booster Seats
A congressional subcommittee has launched an investigation into Evenflo’s product marketing and testing practices, according to ProPublica [3]. In a letter sent to the company’s CEO, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., and Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif., requested all testing, labeling and other records related to the Big Kid Booster Seat for an investigation by the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform’s Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy.
New York Couple Sues Evenflo for Booster Seat Injuries
A man and woman from Long Island, New York, filed a lawsuit against Evenflo after a car crash involving their two young daughters, Jillian and Samantha. Jillian was strapped inside an Evenflo Big Kid Booster Seat despite weighing just 37 pounds when the accident occurred. She is now paralyzed from the neck down and requires a ventilator to breathe. Samantha was in a different car seat and fully recovered.

Evenflo Maestro Booster Seat Recall
In October, 2010 Evenflo Inc. announced a recall for nearly 14,000 Maestro Car Seats because of a potential defect which could cause the seats to crack and fail during an accident, according to Consumer Reports. The recall affected booster seats with model numbers starting with 310. They were built from Nov. 24, 2009 to April 9, 2010.
Evenflo Envision / Majestic High Chair Recall
In April 2009, Evenflo issued 2 high chair recalls affecting the Envision and Majestic Boosters due to reports of fall and choking hazards or injuries. Evenflo said that recline fasteners and metal screws on both sides of the high chair can loosen and fall out, allowing the seat back to detach or recline unexpectedly. Children can fall backwards or fall out of the high chair and suffer bumps and bruises to the head, abrasions, cuts and bruises. Detached hardware also poses a choking hazard to children.
Evenflo received at least 320 reports of seat backs detaching or reclining unexpectedly, resulting in 19 reports of bumps and bruises to the head and 35 reports of other injuries including abrasions, pinches and bruises. Evenflo also received at least 13 reports of recline fasteners and screws falling out of the high chair, resulting in one incident in which a fastener and/or screws were found in a child’s hand or mouth but were removed before choking occurred.
