What’s the Problem?
August 1, 2016 – According to the suit, plaintiff received the Essure implant at Alton Memorial Hospital, after which she began suffering pain in the abdomen, pelvis and back, as well as bleeding, perforation and other adverse health complications.
Essure is marketed as a permanent surgical sterilization procedure for women developed by Conceptus Inc., a company absorbed by Bayer AG. The device consists of a coil designed to induce fibrosis and block the fallopian tubes in order to prevent fertilization. Essure was approved by the FDA in 2002, and more than 750,000 women across the U.S. have undergone the procedure, according to Bayer.
The complaint alleges that Essure is made of stainless steel which may become more reactive with oxygen, causing rust, and that other metals in the contraceptive could cause irritation and toxicity. Additionally, the suit claims the device includes a type of plastic which is not compatible with implantation.
The lawsuit further alleges that Bayer and its affiliates failed to adequately warn of the potential health risks of Essure, and neglected to properly instruct doctors on how to properly implant the contraceptive. Plaintiff has not requested a specific amount of compensation.
