What’s the problem?
September 20, 2010 – A salmonella food poisoning class action suit has been filed against Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg, who allegedly sold millions of contaminated eggs that have sickened hundreds of people throughout the United States.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago last week on behalf of six plaintiffs from Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, New York, and Mississippi. The lawsuit seeks class action status to represent all people who bought or fell ill after eating eggs from Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms in Iowa. To date, at least 1,519 people have fallen ill from egg-induced salmonella poisoning, but it is likely that the true number of food poisoning cases is much higher since most illnesses are never reported.
Salmonella Poisoning Information
Salmonellosis is a type of food poisoning caused by the salmonella bacterium. There are many different kinds of these bacteria; Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enteritidis are the most common types in the United States.
Every year, approximately 40,000 cases of salmonellosis are reported in the U.S. Because many milder cases are not diagnosed or reported, the actual number of infections may be 30 or more times greater. Salmonellosis is more common in the summer than winter. Children are the most likely to get salmonellosis; young children, older adults, and people with impaired immune systems are the most likely to have severe infections.
