What’s the problem?
December 20, 2011 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced today that Eclectic Institute is currently recalling specific lots of freeze-dried capsules of Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) and Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.
The Gotu Kola included in this recall was sold between September 14 and December 14, 2011. The Bladderwrack tablets were sold from July 14 to December 14, 2011. All of the products involved were packaged in either glass or plastic bottles. Lot numbers are printed on the bottom of the labels.
This recall was initiated after a routine audit of micro-testing records found that the supplements in question had conflicting lab results – one positive and one negative for Salmonella. To date, there have been no illnesses reported in connection with this recall.
Salmonella is a group of bacteria that causes diarrheal illness in humans and animals. The microscopic bacteria typically passes from host to host via fecal matter. There are a number of different serotypes of Salmonella bacteria. Salmonella serotypes Typhimurium and Enteritidis are the most commonly reported strains found in the United States. Salmonella has been known to cause foodborne illness for over a century. The bacteria were first identified by an American scientist named Salmon, for whom they are named. Signs and symptoms of salmonella poisoning include:
- abdominal pain
- muscle pains
- blood in the stool
