How does cold therapy work?

Cold therapy is designed to work by decreasing fluid build up and swelling in the injured body part. It attempts to slow the release of chemicals that cause pain and inflammation. Additionally, cold therapy devices decrease pain by reducing the ability of the nerve endings to conduct impulses and aids in pain relief by limiting the muscle’s ability to maintain contraction. For these reasons, cold therapy is generally prescribed throughout the duration of certain patients’ rehabilitation.

EBIce Cold Therapy Devices Causing Numerous Injuries

EBIce is a cold therapy device developed by EBIce Patient Care Inc. intended to be administered by patients at home. With no or very little instruction and essentially no warnings, a patient uses the device by placing the pad on the affected area, fills the ice chest with ice and water, and the circulating pump inside the ice chest circulates cold water through the tubes and cooling pads. We believe the company failed to provide proper instruction on correct use of the device and neglected to provide adequate safety warnings. Without instruction the patient, thinking that more cooling is better, will subject the skin and underlying nerves around the affected area to very cold temperatures.

As well, the EBIce devices do not have a shut-off valve or alarm that will prevent overuse of the product or circulation of water that is dangerously cold. Users of the EBIce device have suffered serious injuries including nerve damage and damage to the skin.
