Update: Teething Tablets Class Action Filed in New York
January 4, 2017 – A teething tablets lawsuit has been filed in New York on behalf of consumers who purchased homeopathic remedies that were the subject of a Sept. 2016 warning by the FDA. While the agency’s warning resulted in the withdrawal of affected products from store shelves, the suit alleges that consumers were never offered refunds for their purchases. Defendants named in the case include: Hyland’s Inc., Church & Dwight Co. Inc., Standard Homeopathic Co., CVS Health Corp. and Target Corp.
What’s the problem?
November 28, 2016 – According to an FDA Safety Alert issued Friday, the following products are being recalled because they may contain too much belladonna, “a substance that can cause harm at larger doses”:
- CVS Homeopathic Infants’ Teething Tablet 135 tablets, UPC: 050428424162, Lots: 41116 and 43436
- Kids Relief Homeopathic Ear Relief Oral Liquid 0.85 fl. oz., UPC: 778159090639, Lot: 35254
- CVS Homeopathic Kids’ Ear Relief Liquid 0.85 fl. oz., UPC: 050428441633, Lot: 33149
Atropa belladonna, commonly known as belladonna or deadly nightshade, is included in these products to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with teething and earaches. Belladonna 12X HPUS is extracted from the whole plant, of which a small portion is Belladonna alkaloids (the component associated with side effects).
Last month, FDA launched an investigation into the safety of homeopathic teething tablets after at least 400 adverse events — including the deaths of 10 children — were associated with the products. CVS and Hylands issued recalls for their own children’s teething tablets as a result of these problems.
Consumers who purchased any products affected by this recall should discard them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If your child or other loved one experienced problems that may be related to use of teething tablets or ear medicine, you should contact your doctor immediately.
