What’s the Problem?

May 31, 2016 – Cordero Caples was hospitalized in Colorado Springs, CO., last November and forced to undergo spinal surgery, according to CBS News. He spent 10 days in the hospital, and still has not been able to return to his job as an automobile detailer.

“He has a hard time moving his body,” said Colessia Porter, Caples’ sister. “How much of a range of motion he’ll have is something we just don’t know.”

According to the Colorado Springs Fire Department, emergency crews responded to the call at Caples’ place of employment, and the incident is still under investigation. While most e-cigarette explosions have caused burns and related injuries, Caples is unique in that he suffered a broken neck, together with his other injuries.

Although safety officials say fires or explosions caused by e-cigarettes, vapes and other related smoking devices are rare, ECigOne.com claims at least 168 such incidents have been reported in the media thru April 3, 2016. Of these:

  • 45 explosions occurred during use.
  • 73 explosions occurred during charging.
  • 28 explosions happened during transport, storage or unknown circumstances.
  • 22 events involved spare batteries for removable battery mods.
  • 101 incidents resulted in personal injury or death.
  • 67 events resulted in no injuries to people, but may have resulted in animal death or severe property damage.

According to a 2014 warning by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), “The shape and construction of e-cigarettes can make them more likely than other products with lithium-ion batteries to behave like ‘flaming rockets’ when a battery fails.”

While it is uncertain as to whether Caples will be filing a lawsuit seeking compensation for his injuries, other victims of exploding e-cigarettes have already filed complaints against manufacturers and retailers of the devices. Attorneys are expecting many more of these cases to be filed in the coming weeks and months, given the massive growth of the largely unregulated electronic cigarette industry.
