According to two new reports identified by the FDA, a female sex hormone contained in many newer birth control products including Yaz, Yasmin and Beyaz may increase the risk of severe cardiovascular events in certain users. The progestin ‘Drospirenone’ has been linked to blood clots, venous thromboembolism (VTE), and other extremely serious side effects. FDA is now evaluating the results of the studies in an attempt to determine the link between drospirenone and these deadly conditions.

What’s the problem?
May 31, 2011 – In a press release issued today by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), two new studies have been published evaluating the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in women who use birth control pills that contain drospirenone.
The combined research sought to determine whether there is a higher risk of blood clots in women taking contraceptives that contain drospirenone compared to females using pills that contain levonorgestrel, a popular synthetic progestogen contained in many older forms of birth control. According to the results of the study, drospirenone users are associated with a two to three times greater risk for VTE than women taking levonorgestrel-containing medications.
Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)
VTE is a disease that includes both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is a potentially lethal condition that recurs frequently, is often overlooked, and can result in long-term complications. Signs and symptoms of VTE may include:
- swelling of the leg or along a vein in the leg
- pain or tenderness in the leg, which you may feel only when standing or walking
- increased warmth in the area of the leg that’s swollen or in pain
- red or discolored skin on the leg
VTE is well known as a cause of preventable morbidity in hospitalized patients. Approximately 25% of VTE cases are associated with hospitalization, and the condition may occur in individuals hospitalized to treat medical illness as well as in those undergoing surgery.
Side Effects of Drospirenone
Drospirenone has been known to lead to other serious health problems including (but not limited to):
- Blood Clots
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
- Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVA)
- Heart Attack
- Myocardial Infarction
- Gallbladder Disease / Injury (cholecystitis)
- Gallbladder Removal (cholecystectomy)
