The Donjoy Iceman cold therapy system has been linked to a variety of extremely serious skin and nerve injuries. Unfortunately, the Iceman system lacks sufficient warnings and instructions that could prevent the device from injuring users. As a result, patients using the Donjoy Iceman may use the device for too long, which can result in serious and permanent injuries.

What is Cold Therapy?
Cold therapy devices are typically used for pain relief by patients following various surgical procedures. The approach combines ice and compression to reduce swelling or pain from strains, sprains, pulled muscles and ligaments. The Donjoy Iceman cold therapy unit is designed to provide up to seven hours of continuous cold therapy using a patented semi-closed loop system. According to the manufacturer, the Iceman maintains a more constant and accurate temperature than competitor’s systems. Unfortunately, prolonged use of devices like the Donjoy Iceman have been linked to a number of extremely serious side effects and injuries.
Injuries linked to Donjoy Iceman Cold Therapy
Some of the more serious injuries linked to the Donjoy Iceman cold therapy system include (but are not limited to):
- Skin damage
- Nerve damage
- Wrist, ankle, shoulder or back injury
- Hand amputation
- Foot amputation
- Loss of a limb
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
- Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
Many cold therapy patients mistakenly believe that the colder the pad and the longer you can keep it on your skin, the better. This is incorrect, and because of existing nerve damage or desensitization from the surgery, the patient may not feel how cold the pad is on their skin. This is the point at which serious injuries occur. The aforementioned side effects have also been found in patients who use the product as recommended.
