Which Products are Affected by the Recall?

This recall includes DePuy Synthes Adaptor and Light Adaptor for Small Battery Drive (SBD) and Small Battery Drive II (SBD II), serial numbers 05.001.024 and 05.001.108. These products were manufactured between October 6, 2005 and April 5, 2016, and distributed from January 2006 to June 2016.

What is the DePuy Synthes Battery Adaptor?

The Adaptor and Light Adaptor are power sources for the DePuy Synthes SBD and SBD II surgical power tool systems, which are used for drilling or cutting bone in orthopedic surgery. The adaptors and surgical tool systems are only used in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.

What’s the Problem?

The adaptors are being recalled because they may produce extreme internal pressure, which may cause the device to explode. Use of affected products may cause adverse health consequences, including death.

Who’s Affected?

  • Surgeons and other healthcare providers who use the Adaptor and Light Adaptor SBD and SBD II
  • Patients undergoing surgery in which these products are used
  • Bystanders or other staff who are in close proximity to where these tools are being used.
