What’s the Problem?

October 26, 2017 – After receiving the DePuy Attune Knee in 2014, Mike claims he’s had nothing but problems. The implant buckles and pops, and he is in constant pain.

Mike has already undergone one knee revision surgery, and not even one year later the replacement device was loose and required that a bigger spacer be implanted.

He claims that the Depuy Synthes Knee left him completely disabled, and that he now requires a cane or brace to get around. Before the surgery, Mike says he could do pretty much anything.

“My leg is so wobbly and my movements are so limited to the point that I’d rather have my leg amputated,” he says. “Now they tell me I need yet another entire knee replacement.”

A recent study in the Journal of Knee Surgery identified an unusually high rate of premature failure in patients who received the DePuy Attune Synthes knee replacement, and the FDA’s MAUDE database found at least 21 reports of tibial loosening at the implant–cement interface, referred to as “tibial baseplate failure,” or “debonding.” In layman’s terms, the artificial knee comes unglued from a patient’s lower leg.

Mike recently went to another orthopedic surgeon who wasn’t familiar with the DePuy Attune knee, so he was sent to a revision expert. The expert informed Mike about a piece of cartilage that was apparently stuck under his knee cap from his quad that had torn. Mike told the surgeon he knew about the torn cartilage – that’s why he had knee replacement in the first place.

“So, every problem I am having with this knee is due to a little tear,” Mike said. “And this guy told me there wasn’t a recall on any part of the Attune system–I am not having him do the surgery.”
