Registry to Monitor Problems With Hip, Knee Replacements
October 14, 2010 – A new method of monitoring hip & knee replacement surgeries around the country called the ‘American Joint Replacement Registry’ will begin collecting data shortly, which has the potential to uncover problems with the defective devices and lead to more recalls.
Currently, there is no way to track long-term results for patients who have received the implants. By monitoring when patients require additional surgeries to fix issues with the devices, the new registry hopes to identify cases where parts wear out prematurely due to problems such as implant loosening or dislocation.
DePuy Hip Update 1/23/13: Newly disclosed court documents have revealed that a 2011 internal investigation conducted by Johnson & Johnson on its much-troubled DePuy ASR hip implant estimated that the device would fail within five years in nearly 40% of recipients. For reasons still unclear, the company failed to make this information public while simultaneously downplaying the potential health complications associated with its metal-on-metal hip.
