What’s the problem?
March 31, 2011 – Last week, the Rhode Island Department of Health announced that DeFusco’s Bakery was recalling zeppole pastries that may have been contaminated with salmonella bacteria. To date, at least one death and 39 serious illnesses (including 24 hospitalizations) have been linked to the contaminated zeppoles. Aside from being sold at DeFusco’s stores, the pastries in question were distributed to the following retailers:
- American Bakery Supplies
- Roch’s Market
- Meal Works
- Touch of Class Catering
- Crugnale Bakery
- Colvitto’s Bistro
- Sal’s Bakery
- Focaccia World
According to the announcement, the shells used to make the pastries were stored in egg crates and most likely came into contact with raw eggs. Consumers are advised to discard all baked goods from DeFusco’s, and all zeppoles from the above locations. Anyone who has consumed recalled products and gotten sick should contact their doctor immediately.
