What’s the Problem?
This recall affects Crate and Barrel Danish White and Natural Tall Bookcases (SKU 325982) and Danish Walnut and White Tall Bookcases (SKU 325943), according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [1].
“Crate and Barrel have received five reports of the bookcase’s leg breaking,” CPSC said.
The bookshelves have 4 shelves and measure 60 inches tall by 32 inches wide. The bookcase has a 2-tone white and wood finish. There is a label underneath the bottom shelf with Crate and Barrel, the SKU number, and the name of the product on it.
The recalled bookshelves were sold at Crate and Barrel stores nationwide and online from June 2017 through January 2020 for about $300.
If you purchased a bookshelf that is affected by this recall, you should contact Crate and Barrel to receive a full refund.
This recall began on October 21, 2020.
Falling Objects in Childcare
Falling bookcases and shelves are a common problem in childcare settings. A child’s interest in these objects is understandable given that they often contain books, toys, and other entertaining items designed for their enjoyment.
Kids also enjoy climbing and approach these items as indoor playground equipment. Shelves, bookcases, tables, and all kinds of furniture pose 2 separate risks to children.
The 1st risk is crushing children under the furniture. The 2nd risk is when children pull, push, or slide heavy objects off and onto themselves or others. This risk is especially serious when things like aquariums, animal cages, TVs, and slow cookers are not properly secured.
