Quick Summary:

  1. The recall expanded to include over 88 products distributed nationwide under various brands, impacting numerous consumers.
  2. Legal action has been taken against major retailers like Walmart and Costco, with allegations of unjust egg price increases during the COVID-19 pandemic, shedding light on broader economic implications beyond food safety concerns.
  3. The expanded recall now includes Kirkland Signature 2 Count Organic Hard-Cooked Eggs, exclusively sold at Costco.

Boiled Egg Recall Expanded to Include Kirkland Products

January 21, 2020 – The nationwide recall of foods containing hard-boiled eggs has been expanded to include Kirkland Signature 2 Count Organic Hard-Cooked Eggs, which are sold exclusively at Costco stores and online [1].

This recall has raised concerns about egg prices and their impact on consumers. The lawsuit, filed in a U.S. District Court in the Northern District, alleges that multiple retailers and other stores, including Walmart and Costco, exploited the economic turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to increase egg prices in California unjustly.

The class action lawsuit accuses these retailers of engaging in price gouging and aims to represent California consumers who purchased eggs during the state of emergency declared by the Governor.

On December 18, 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notified Gainesville, Georgia-based Almark Foods, Inc., that its hard-boiled and peeled eggs in pails were the likely source of a listeria outbreak, which has caused at least seven severe illnesses, including one death. Two days later, Almark issued a recall for 10 of its hard-boiled egg products.

On December 23, that recall was expanded to at least 88 products that were distributed nationwide and sold under dozens of different name brands. These products were primarily distributed through grocery stores, affecting a wide range of consumers. Click on the link to view a complete list of recalled eggs [2].
