In some cases, this severe damage may even be caused by as little as one hour of continuous contact with a cold therapy unit. The FDA has also recalled certain cold therapy machines due to reports of serious side effects. Some of the more common brands of cold therapy devices include:

- BREG Polar Care
Cold Therapy Side Effects
While cold therapy can reduce unwanted nerve irritation, it sometimes can leave the tissue affected with unusual sensations, such as numbness or tingling, or with redness and irritation of the skin. These effects are generally temporary.
Additionally, if a patient uses a cold therapy device constantly for prolonged periods of time, he or she may in danger of serious injuries including (but not limited to):
- Nerve damage
- Tissue damage
- Chronic pain
- Skin abrasions
If you feel numbness, tingling, burning or itching, you should visit your doctor to make sure you haven’t suffered severe injuries. Symptoms of damaged nerves may include sensitivity, numbness, pain, prickling, tingling or burning. Depending on the severity of nerve damage, patients may experience pain for several months, and may lose feeling in the affected area permanently.
