Coarctation of the Aorta Lawsuit

Awards & recognition

Were you prescribed antidepressants while pregnant? If your child was born with the severe birth defect known as coarctation of the aorta, it may have been the result of being prescribed antidepressant medications during pregnancy.

What Is Coarctation of the Aorta?

The aorta is the major artery that carries blood away from the heart to the body. When a child has a coarctation of the aorta, their aorta is narrowed at some point. When this occurs, the defect can affect the body's blood circulation because the left side of the heart has to work harder to pump blood through the narrowed aorta.

Antidepressants linked to birth defects

Women should be aware that antidepressants have been linked to coarctation of the aorta and many other serious birth defects. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, and are being treated with one of the following antidepressant medications, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Which drugs are harmful?

The following antidepressants have been associated with the development of coarctation of the aorta in children born to mothers who took them during pregnancy:

  • Paxil (Paroxetine)
  • Zoloft (Sertraline)
  • Celexa (Citalopram)
  • Prozac (Fluoxetine)
  • Lexapro (Escitalopram)
  • Symbyax (fluoxetine and olanzapine)
  • Wellbutrin (Bupropion)
  • Effexor (Venlafaxine)

What are the signs / symptoms of coarctation of the aorta?

Signs and symptoms of this birth defect depend on its seriousness - children with severe aortic narrowing tend to show symptoms earlier in life, while mild cases may not be diagnosed until adulthood. Babies with severe cases usually begin displaying symptoms shortly after birth. These include pale skin, irritability, heavy sweating, and difficulty breathing. If left untreated, aortic coarctation can lead to heart failure and even sudden death.
