What is Talc?
Talc is a mineral composed mainly of the elements magnesium, silicon and oxygen, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS) . As the principle ingredient in talcum powder, talc absorbs moisture and helps reduce friction, making it useful for keeping skin dry and helping to prevent rashes. Talc is widely used in cosmetic products such as Johnson’s Baby Powder and adult body and facial powders, as well as in a variety of other consumer products.
What is Cornstarch?
As the name implies, cornstarch is derived from corn, and is used as an ingredient in many types of food, including cornbread! Cornstarch looks a little like talc and has some of the same properties that make it useful as a cosmetic, such as helping keep the skin dry and preventing diaper rash.
Cornstarch vs. Talc
Despite their similar appearance and relative usefulness as a cosmetic ingredient, cornstarch and talc are actually very different substances. For instance, one is a mineral and the other is a food ingredient (if you don’t know which is which, you haven’t been paying very good attention to this article, and god only knows what you've been putting in your cornbread). Cornstarch also contains larger particles, so it is considered to be a safer ingredient in baby powder compared to talc.
