Listeriosis Key Facts
- Listeriosis is a serious, yet preventable and treatable, disease.
- Those most at risk include pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems due to conditions like HIV, leukemia, cancer, kidney transplant, or steroid therapy.
- High-risk foods to avoid include deli meats, ready-to-eat meat products (such as cooked, cured, and fermented meats and sausages), soft cheeses, and cold-smoked fish products.
- Listeria monocytogenes, the bacterium responsible for listeriosis, is widespread in nature and can be found in soil, water, vegetation, and animal feces, leading to food contamination.
