Cialis Skin Cancer Lawsuits Filed Against Eli Lilly

August 10, 2016 – Seven men who used Cialis to treat ED sued Eli Lilly last week, claiming they developed melanoma as a result of their use of the medication, according to the Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ). On August 2, the plaintiffs filed separate but similar complaints in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis, alleging that the drugmaker knew or should have known that side effects of Cialis could increase the risk of “exacerbating melanoma.”

The lawsuits note studies in several medical journals that the plaintiffs claim link Cialis’ mechanism of action to melanoma, including one which found an 84% increased risk of “developing or encouraging invasive melanoma” associated with sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.

How Can Cialis Cause Cancer?

In a commentary published alongside the JAMA study, dermatologist June Robinson, M.D. from Northwestern University explained that both Cialis and Viagra work by inhibiting the enzyme PDE5, which is also blocked by melanoma. This makes an association between the drugs and melanoma biologically plausible, since the mechanism affects the same cell-signaling pathways at work as melanoma metastasizes.

Melanoma Symptoms

Unusual moles, sores, lumps, blemishes, markings or changes in the way an area of the skin looks or feels may be a symptom of melanoma or another type of skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). The most important warning sign of melanoma is a new spot on the skin or a spot that is changing in size, shape or color. Spots that looks different from all of the other spots on your skin (known as the “ugly duckling sign”) may also be an indicator of the disease. If you have one of these warning signs, have your skin checked by a doctor immediately.
