Representing Victims of Sexual Abuse in Religious Organizations
What’s the problem?
The physical and mental effects of sexual abuse on children, adolescents, and teens are wide-reaching and can be devastating. One of the most heinous crimes a member of a Christian clergy can commit involves sexual contact with a child. Over the past 20 years, the media has shown the public outcry against sexual abusers and their atrocious actions.
Because so many survivors of all types of sexual abuse have recently come forward to report these criminal acts, it has come to light that this type of highly inappropriate and unlawful action is not rare.
Thousands of reports of child sexual abuse are filed each year in the United States and the annual estimated cost of abuse around the country is nearly $94 billion. It has been estimated that 15 to 25 percent of women and 5 to 15 percent of men are sexually abused as children, and most incidents go unreported and untreated.
Sadly, the recent clergy sexual abuse scandals have shown that some religious organizations are primarily interested in protecting their image. Instead of expelling clergy members who are guilty of sexual abuse, some religious groups harbor them. Instead of reporting the abuse, some church groups conceal the situation, fearing that it will harm their good name.
In essence, they shelter child molesters, enabling them to victimize other children. At the law firm of Schmidt & Clark, LLP, we are committed to ending these horrible practices.
