What’s the Problem?

July 25, 2017 – David Goodfriend, director of the Loudoun County Health Department, who confirmed the second case of norovirus associated with the Chipotle in Sterling, Virginia, stated previously that another diagnosis would be a strong indicator that norovirus was behind most if not all of the 135+ reported illnesses.

The restaurant was voluntarily closed for a “complete sanitization” on July 18 and then reopened the next day, with the company announcing that the problem had been handled and that its food was safe to eat. Nevertheless, Chipotle’s stock fell sharply in response to the incident, according to the Washington Post.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists norovirus as a leading cause of illnesses from contaminated food. Signs and symptoms of the virus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malaise and abdominal pain.

Goodfriend says some of those sickened were Chipotle employees. Officials said they plan to release additional information as details emerge.

“Based on symptoms reported and these preliminary laboratory results, the cause of the outbreak is believed to be norovirus, though the specific source of the norovirus has not yet been identified,” Goodfriend said. “The Health Department is not aware of any customers becoming ill since the reopening of the facility last Wednesday.”

Chipotle introduced a new food handling protocol last year in response to previous food poisoning outbreaks. In the latest incident, the company dispatched “multiple teams” of sanitizers to the store and alerted local health officials, it said.
