What’s the problem?
January 11, 2016 – Chipotle has announced that it received a grand jury subpoena from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California as part of a criminal investigation by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) into a norovirus outbreak that occurred at a Chipotle in Simi Valley last summer.
In August, at least 207 people (189 customers and 18 employees) were sickened after eating at the restaurant, according to Doug Beach, manager of the Community Services Program at the Ventura County Environmental Health Department. Breach said the restaurant was briefly closed and then re-opened after it had been “washed down.” At least 2 California residents have filed suit for damages related to the outbreak.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can be contracted from an infected person, contaminated water / food, or by coming into contact with tainted surfaces, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The virus causes the stomach and / or intestines to become inflamed (acute gastroenteritis), which leads to symptoms including stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.
The subpoena, which was disclosed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), stated that Chipotle must produce “a broad range of documents” related to the norovirus outbreak. The company said it is cooperating fully with the investigation, which is being carried out in a joint effort between the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California and the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations.
