Update: Chipotle Restaurant in Virginia Suspected as Source of New Norovirus Outbreak
July 20, 2017 – More than 130 people fell ill after eating at a Chipotle in Sterling, Virginia, the restaurant suspected to be at the center of a recent norovirus outbreak. Chipotle confirmed that it had received a “small number” of food poisoning complaints from customers who ate at the restaurant, and closed the location for 2 days to conduct “a complete sanitazation.”
What’s the Problem?
September 12, 2016 – Chipotle’s troubles began last fall with the temporary closure of all 43 of its restaurants in Oregon and Washington due to an E. coli outbreak. Just 2 months later, the chain was hit with another outbreak when 80 Boston College students developed norovirus after eating at a Chipotle restaurant near the campus. That location was also temporarily shut down and an inspection revealed a number food safety violations including meat stored at unsafe temperatures and an ill staff member who went to work instead of calling in sick.
As a result of these problems, Chipotle now prepares its fresh produce at a centralized off-site kitchen and ships it to each location instead of prepping those items individually at each store. The chain has also cut back on partnering with local farmers who have a hard time keeping up with strict food safety standards.
Even after instituting these changes, however, Chipotle’s reputation was further damaged when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that even more people had fallen ill with E. coli after eating at Chipotle restaurants. Those five cases — reported in Kansas and Oklahoma — are believed to have been reported so late because symptoms often take days or even weeks to develop and some victims may have not gone to the doctor immediately.
Chipotle was served with a grand jury subpoena in January 2016 related to a completely separate event — the chain’s first norovirus outbreak that occurred at one of its Simi Valley, CA restaurants in August 2015. Investigators required the company to produce a “broad range of documents” related to that incident.
Terms of the recent settlement have not been made public. However, a Chipotle spokesman stated that the chain “does right by our customers and simply wanted to make things right for people who were affected by any of those incidents.”
