Organic sprouted chia powder has been linked to an unusual salmonella outbreak that sickened at least 31 people in 16 states. It was unusual due to the fact that the chia powder was said to be responsible for three different strains of salmonella bacteria – Salmonella Newport, Salmonella Hartford and Salmonella Oranienburg – in a single outbreak.

CDC: Chia Seed Powder Linked to 3 Salmonella Strains
August 26, 2014 – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that organic sprouted Chia seed powder has resulted in at least:
- 20 cases of Salmonella Newport
- 7 cases of Salmonella Hartford
- 4 cases of Salmonella Oranienburg
Of these, 5 patients required hospitalization. No deaths have been reported.
Chia Powder Recalls
Chia powder is made from chia seeds that are spouted, dried & ground. The salmonella outbreak has resulted in multiple recalls of organic sprouted chia powder and chia seeds. According to the CDC, this outbreak appears to be over, but these products have a long shelf life and it’s unlikely that all contaminated products have been properly disposed of.
CDC recommends that consumers avoid eating any of the recalled chia powder and chia seeds. Recalled products were distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada. CDC’s National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System for Enteric Bacteria (NARMS) lab performed antibiotic resistance tests on isolates collected from 4 patients who were diagnosed with Salmonella Hartford or Newport. All isolates were determined to be pansusceptible (susceptible to all antibiotics tested).
- Abdominal cramps
- Blood in the stool
