Update: Gandhi Allowed to Continue Medical Practice Pending Trial
After Dr. Gandhi was charged in January 2020, lawyers for the Medical Board of California called him an “extreme danger to the public” and could have moved to suspend his license, but they didn’t.
Instead, they convinced the judge to prohibit Gandhi from practicing as a condition of his bail, according to the Los Angeles Times [1.].
The board’s procedures to quickly suspend a medical license in such circumstances are too complex and expensive, the medical board’s lawyers argued in a court filing.
What initially looked like a winning strategy for the Medical Board has since unraveled after another judge agreed with Gandhi’s attorneys that it is the board’s job, not the court’s, to determine whether doctors are qualified to see patients.
In Nov. 2021, the court lifted its restrictions and made Gandhi eligible to practice medicine pending trial. Gandhi’s attorney said he is not currently seeing patients but is looking for work.
What’s the Problem?
Jan. 24, 2020 – Dr. Anshul M. Gandhi, who provided services to Cedars-Sinai as a contract physician, was booked Wednesday on a single count of forced oral copulation, according to the LAPD. He was released from jail Thursday after posting a $100,000 bond.
Few other details have been released except that the alleged assault took place inside the victim’s apartment near downtown, and that the investigation is ongoing.
There have been other complaints of sexually inappropriate behavior by Dr. Gandhi against coworkers, according to an unnamed source at the hospital. He is no longer providing service for Cedars-Sinai, a spokesperson said.
