Byetta Pancreatic Cancer Surgery

For Byetta pancreatic cancer patients whose disease is confined to the pancreas, surgical intervention may be an option. Operations used in people diagnosed with early stage Byetta pancreatic cancer may include:

  • Whipple procedure (pancreatoduodenectomy) – Involves removing the head of the pancreas, a portion of the small intestine, gallbladder, and part of the bile duct. Once this is complete, the surgeon reconnects the remaining parts of the pancreas, stomach and intestines to allow the patient to digest food.
  • Pancreatectomy – Surgery to remove the tail and/or a small portion of the body of the pancreas. The spleen may also be removed during a pancreatectomy. This procedure carries a high risk of internal bleeding and infection.

Byetta Pancreatic Cancer Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy utilizes high-energy beams to destroy Byetta pancreatic cancer cells. Patients may receive radiation before or after surgery, or in combination with chemotherapy. External Byetta pancreatic cancer radiation therapy comes from a machine that moves around the patient, directing radiation at specific points on the body. A small number of specialized medical centers may deliver radiation therapy during surgery, a procedure known as intraoperative radiation.

Chemotherapy & Chemoradiation Treatment

Chemotherapy involves using drugs to help kill Byetta pancreatic cancer cells. These drugs may be injected into a vein or taken orally, and may be used alone or in combination with other drugs. Chemoradiation, a method of treatment that involves both chemotherapy and radiation therapy, is typically used when the disease has spread beyond the pancreas, but only to nearby organs and not to distant regions of the body. Chemoradiation may also be used after surgery to reduce the recurrence of Byetta pancreatic cancer.

Targeted Therapy for Byetta Pancreatic Cancer

Targeted therapy uses a drug called Tarceva (generic: erlotinib) to attack specific abnormalities within cancer cells. Specifically, Tarceva blocks chemicals that signal cancer cells to grow and divide. Targeted therapy is often combined with chemotherapy for use in patients with advanced stage Byetta pancreatic cancer.
