What is Bydureon?
Bydureon is an injectable medication that helps control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. The drug works by mimicking the actions of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, or GLP-1, which helps the pancreas produce insulin more efficiently. Bydureon has the same active ingredient (exenatide) as the Byetta pen; however, Byetta is typically injected twice daily whereas Bydureon uses ‘microspheres’ that degrade slowly, allowing for once-weekly dosing.
Bydureon and Pancreatic Cancer
Bydureon has been linked to pancreatitis, a disease in which the pancreas becomes inflamed. If left untreated or diagnosed late, pancreatitis can lead to pancreatic cancer, which occurs when uncontrolled cell growth begins in the pancreas.
Signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:
- Weight loss
- Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
- Dark urine
- Light colored stool
- Nausea / vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Back pain
- Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
Each year, about 45,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The prognosis is typically bleak, though survival rates have been improving in recent years. The median survival rate from the time of diagnosis is arguably the worst of any of the cancers — untreated advanced pancreatic cancer is about 3 1/2 months; with good treatment, this increases to about 6 months.
Bydureon Side Effects

Are Cases Being Settled?
In August 2014, AstraZeneca and Amylin Pharmaceuticals announced that it had reached settlement agreements in 84 lawsuits involving Bydureon and Byetta. At the time, more than 400 complaints had been filed by users alleging injuries including pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer.
