Listeria Food Poisoning (Listeriosis)
Listeria is a gram-positive bacterial genus that consists of seven known species. The genus was named after the pioneer of sterile surgery Joseph Lister in 1940. The major human pathogen in the genus is Listeria monocytogenes, which leads to listeriosis, a potentially life-threatening infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacteria. Listeriosis is an extremely serious disease, and has a mortality rate greater than 25%. The two main clinical manifestations of listeriosis include sepsis and meningitis. Signs and symptoms of listeriosis may include:
- muscle aches
- stiff neck
- confusion or changes in alertness
- loss of balance
