Update: Brompton Electric Bikes Recalled Over Crash Risk
The CPSC announced on June 9, 2022, that Brompton is recalling about 2,230 electric folding bicycles [1] after the company received at least 10 reports of faulty mudguards causing the bikes to crash, resulting in nine reports of injuries, including head and facial impact, broken bones, shoulder dislocation, bruising, and chipped teeth and two reports of hospitalizations.
Brompton says the problem is that “The mudguard is positioned too close to the front wheel which can cause the wheel to lock up leading to sudden deceleration of the bike if an object gets caught between the mudguard and front tire, posing crash and injury hazards to the rider.”
If you purchased an electric bike that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact an authorized Brompton dealer for a free repair, which replaces the front mudguard stay and flap and increases the clearance between the mudguard and tire.
What’s the Problem?
This recall affects about 600 Brompton Electric Folding Bicycles with a 3-section folding frame and 16-inch wheels, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [2].
“Due to a software malfunction, the electric system can continue to provide assistance to the motor, causing continued forward momentum, when the rider is not actively pedaling, posing fall and injury hazards,” CPSC said. “The firm has received one report of a software issue that caused a bicycle to provide continued assistance when the rider had stopped pedaling.”
The recalled bikes were sold in black, white, Turkish green & bolt lacquer. The serial number is printed on a label on the frame of the bicycle. Click here [3] to view a complete list of serial numbers included in the recall.
Affected bicycles were sold at the Brompton Junction Store in New York and authorized Brompton Electric Dealers nationwide from June 2020 through March 2021 for between $3,500 and $3,800.
If you purchased a folding bike that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact your Brompton Electric dealer for a free software upgrade to Version 1-2-10-2.
This recall began on April 21, 2021.
