What’s the Problem with Brilliant Blue G?

March 19, 2012 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning today stating that it had received reports of endophthalmitis (eye infections) in a number of individuals in several states who were treated with Brilliant Blue G (BBG) during eye surgeries.

According to the FDA’s warning, the BBG was supplied by Franck’s Compounding Lab in Ocala, Florida. In response to the adverse event reports, Franck’s Pharmacy issued a nationwide recall for all lots of Brilliant Blue G on March 9, 2012. BBG is not currently approved by the FDA.

FDA is advising clinicians in possession of Brilliant Blue G to immediately quarantine and return any remaining product. This includes any and all lots of BBG received by Franck’s Pharmacy.

Fungal Endophthalmitis

Fungal endophthalmitis is a serious health condition characterized by an inflammation of tissues inside the eyes which has been reported as a rare complication of eye surgery. Signs and symptoms of Brilliant Blue G-induced fungal endophthalmitis may include:

  • decreased vision
  • pain
  • redness, especially after eye surgery
  • blurred vision

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean that you have fungal endophthalmitis. However, if you experience one or more of these symptoms after being treated with Brilliant Blue G, you should contact your eye doctor for a complete exam immediately.

Treatment for individuals affected by BBG-induced fungal endophthalmitis may include:

  • vitrectomy
  • intraocular antibiotics
  • intraocular anti-inflammatory agents

Unfortunately, even with swift and aggressive treatment, many patients with fungal endophthalmitis may never regain their full vision.
