Update: Salmonella Outbreak Linked to BrightFarms Salad Greens
The FDA is investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium infections (1) linked to BrightFarms salad greens produced in the firm’s Rochelle, Illinois facility. As of October 6, 2021, case counts include:
- Total Illnesses: 31
- Hospitalizations: 4
- Deaths: 0
- Last Illness Onset: August 18, 2021
- States with Cases: IL (18), MI(1), PA (2), WI (10)
- Product Distribution: IA, IL, IN, MI, WI

"Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems," FDA said. "Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain."
The recalled greens were sold by the following retailers:
- Illinois: Mariano's Fresh Markets, Walmart (select stores), Strack Van Till, Sullivan's Foods, Caputo's, Jewel-Osco
- Wisconsin: Pick 'n Save, Metro Market, Copps, Tadych’s, Walmart (select stores)
- Iowa: Walmart (select stores)
- Indiana: Strack Van Till
BrightFarms initiated this recall after being notified of illnesses among 8 consumers, some of whom purchased or consumed the above products during June 2021.
If you purchased any BrightFarms products that are affected by this recall, you should not eat them, and either throw them away or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
Anyone concerned about a potential salmonella infection from recalled BrightFarms greens should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
This recall began on July 16, 2021.
