A company that manufactures trendy Brazilian Blowout hair-straightening treatments has been ordered by the California Attorney General to warn users that its products contain formaldehyde gas, a colorless compound that can cause serious health problems. According to the Attorney General’s office, North Hollywood-based GIB wrongly claimed that their Brazilian Blowout products were ‘formaldehyde free.’ The State of California filed a legal claim against GIB in 2010, stating that substantial levels of formaldehyde gas were emitted by their products in testing.
Brazilian Blowout Update 6/12/12: A recent landmark settlement between the Attorney General’s office of California and manufacturers of Brazilian Blowout hair straightening products is intended to protect salon workers and consumers from cancer-causing agents allegedly contained in the product. The settlement, which was reached earlier this year, stemmed from complaints from stylists and customers that Brazilian Blowout chemicals were causing nose bleeds, burns to the eyes and throat, skin irritation, and asthma attacks. What’s the problem?
Under the terms of the new settlement, GIB’s Brazilian Blowout products must contain labels stating its chemicals “will expose you to formaldehyde [gas], a chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer.”
The warnings are intended to remind hair salon workers to take precautions when handling Brazilian Blowout products.
According to the results of an April 2011 survey conducted by the Environmental Working Group, 28 out of 41 popular hair salons offered Brazilian Blowout hair-straightening treatments, which became trendy after being endorsed by a number of A-list celebrities. Several of the salons offering the services have gone on to join class-action lawsuits against GIB.
