What’s the Problem?

According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [1], this recall affects Bontrager Satellite City Pedals, which were installed as original equipment on Trek “Allant+,” “Dual Sport+,” “FX 2,” “FX 3,” “Verve 2,” “Verve 3,” and “Verve+” model bicycles.

“If the recalled pedals are incorrectly installed by the retailer during assembly, they can fall off the crank arm of the bicycle, posing fall and injury hazards to the rider,” CPSC said. “Trek has received 132 reports of the recalled pedals loosening, locking up or falling off, including seven reports of riders falling and experiencing injuries, including scrapes, bruises and road rash.”

“ZTR02” is stamped on the bike’s pedal and on the pedals that were sold separately as a replacement part. The pedals have orange reflectors on the outside edges.

The recalled bikes were sold online and at Trek Bicycle stores and other bicycle stores nationwide from January 2018 through April 2021 for between $600 and $6,000. The pedals were also sold separately for about $30.

If you purchased any Bontrager bike pedals that are affected by this recall, you should stop using them and contact your local authorized Trek retailer for instructions on receiving free installation of replacement pedals.

This recall began on May 26, 2021.

Peloton Bike Pedals Recall

Peloton issued a nationwide recall for its PR70P clip-in pedals [2.] on about 27,000 of its stationary bikes after it received 120 reports of the pedals breaking and 16 reports of injuries, including five that needed stitches or other medical care.

“PR70P Clip-In Pedals can break unexpectedly during use, causing laceration injuries,” CPSC said.

This recall affects the PR70P or first-generation pedal fitted on Peloton bikes sold between July 2013 and May 2016. The Peloton logo and the word “PELOTON” are molded into the pedal body. An orange Peloton symbol and white lettering spelling “PELOTON” are printed on the top of the cleat binding.

Peloton said it recommended that users change their pedals annually. If a bike is fitted with the faulty pedals, customers should stop using them immediately, the company said.

This recall began on October 15, 2020.
