In a lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court, a woman is accusing Biological Resource Center of Illinois LLC of selling her deceased relative’s body for profit, in a scheme alternately referred to as ”body snatching” or “body brokering.”

What’s the Problem?
November 8, 2017 – Plaintiff in the lawsuit, Ann Marie Van Damme, accuses the defendants of allowing the remains of next of kin David Scott Van Damme to be sold for profit, and for making false representations regarding how the company intended to use the remains of the deceased.
The complaint further accuses Biological Resource Center of intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and negligent misrepresentation, accusing them of selling her relative’s body for profit.
In 2015, a lawsuit (CV2015-013391) was filed against Phoenix-based Biological Resource Center, Inc., accusing it and other defendants of representing that bodily remains donated to them would be used for medical education and research. In reality, the corpses were dismembered, sold for profit, mishandled and improperly disposed of on the black market, according to the suit.
Stephen Gore, owner of the facility, pleaded guilty to a class 3 felony in connection with the defendants’ fraudulent and illegal activity. He was sentenced to 4 years probation and a deferred sentence of 12 months in jail for the crimes, according to the Maricopa County Superior Court.
In the Van Damme case, plaintiff is seeking judgment against the defendant for actual, compensatory, punitive damages, court costs and any further relief this court grants. The lawsuit is: Cook County Circuit Court case number 2017L009793.
