New York Firm Recalls Blackberries Over Norovirus Risk

October 4, 2019 - Cornerstone Premium Foods, a Syracuse, New York-based establishment, has issued a nationwide recall for 16oz frozen blackberries after tests identified the presence of norovirus, according to an FDA Health Alert [1] issued Friday. Affected products feature the UPC Code 8 55104 00765 9, Lot Number GC 1 1092 9, and an expiration date of April 2021. The recalled blackberries were sold to various retailers in NY, MA, PA, ME, FL, AL, WI, CT, and WV, according to the FDA.

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is an extremely contagious virus that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms in humans, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [2]. It is the most common cause of illness from contaminated food nationwide, with an estimated 20 million infections, and up to 800 deaths, each year in the U.S. Norovirus is named after Norwalk, Ohio, where the first outbreak was recorded in 1968.
