FDA Food Safety Alert: Hawaii Business Group Incorporated, Barb’s Favorite Recipes, and Ohana Seafoods Recall Barb’s Local Style Black Bean Sauce and Ohana Flavors Black Bean Sauce Because of Possible Health Risk.
What’s the problem?
January 21, 2011 - The following products manufactured by First Commercial Kitchen LLC are currently being recalled because of possible health risks due to the potential growth of Clostridium botulinum. Consumers are advised to discard these products immediately, even if they do not appear to be spoiled:
- Barb’s Local Style Black Bean Sauce
- Ohana Flavors Black Bean Sauce
The Black Bean Sauce was sold in 12oz. glass jars and labeled as Barb’s Local Style Black Bean Sauce or Ohana Flavors Black Bean Sauce. The UPC numbers on the product are 6-75981-42491-8 and 7-02003-72739-6. The recalled sauce was distributed on Oahu and Molokai.
Important Botulism Food Poisoning Information
Symptoms of the muscle paralysis caused by the bacterial toxin in botulism include (but are not limited to):
- double vision
- drooping eyelids
- slurred speech
- difficulty swallowing
- dry mouth
- muscle weakness
Symptoms generally begin to occur 18 to 36 hours after consuming contaminated food. If untreated, these relatively minor symptoms may progress to cause complete paralysis of the arms, legs, trunk, and respiratory muscles.
