Drospirenone-containing birth control pills including Yaz, Yasmin, Gianvi, Ocella, Beyaz and Safyral have recently been linked to life-threatening blood clots. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently completed a review of several independently-conducted studies and determined that contraceptives containing drospirenone put users at a significantly increased risk of blood clots compared with other forms of birth control. Birth control blood clots occur most often in the arms or legs, and symptoms may include swelling, warmth, redness, and extreme pain at the site of the clot.

Types of Blood Clots
Drospirenone-containing birth control pills have been linked to the following types of blood clots:
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) – Thrombosis events occur when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in a blood vessel. If the thrombus dislodges itself and migrates through the bloodstream, it becomes a thromboembolism. Depending on where the clot ends up, a variety of adverse complications may ensue. Signs and symptoms of a deep vein thrombosis may include:
- Swelling in one or both legs
- Pain or tenderness in one or both legs which may occur only while walking or standing
- Warmth in the skin
- Red or discolored skin
- Visible surface veins
- Leg fatigue
Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) – Condition that occurs when thrombi develop in the vein from red blood cells, fibrin and other components which clump and form a mass. VTEs typically consist of a DVT that occurs in leg veins, and a pulmonary embolism that occurs when a segment of a clot within the deep venous system detaches from the vessel, travels to the lungs, and lodges within the pulmonary arteries.
Pulmonary Embolism (PE) – Occurs when blood is unable to travel through the lungs due to a blood clot in an artery that has migrated from elsewhere in the body through the bloodstream. As a result, lung function is severely compromised and a number of telltale symptoms are experienced, which may include:
- Coughing up blood
- Chest pain that radiates into the shoulder, arm, neck or jaw
- Rapid heartbeat
- Shortness of breath that occurs suddenly and without warning
- Bluish colored or clammy skin
- Excessive sweating
- Light headedness
- Leg swelling
- Weak pulse
Birth Control Side Effects
In addition to having the potential to cause these types of blood clots, drospirenone-containing birth control products have also been linked to the following serious side effects:
- Hyperkalemia (abnormally elevated levels of potassium in the blood)
- Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVAs)
- Heart Attacks
- Gallbladder Disease / Injury (cholecystitis)
- Gallbladder Removal (cholecystectomy)
