Cell biologist and retired academic Ronald F. Dodson took the stand on the 4th day of testimony in an Oakland court, saying he found talc in plaintiff Teresa E. Leavitt’s lung tissue. He said based on her sworn statements attesting to her daily use of Johnson’s baby powder, it follows that she would have J&J talc in her tissues.
“That would be the logical place where you would expect to find talc,” Dodson said.

What’s the problem?
Dodson is the latest witness to testify in the trial, which began on Jan. 7. Leavitt is alleging that J&J and numerous mining companies (which are now owned by Imerys Talc America) have known for decades that talc used in J&J’s cosmetic products contained asbestos. The suit claims that J&J failed to warn consumers about its risks or replace the talc with less toxic cornstarch. Leavitt was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2017 and doctors expect her to die this year.
Earlier this week, both parties took turns questioning Dodson, who is considered an expert on airborne diseases and even co-authored a book titled “Asbestos Risk Assessment Epidemiology and Health Effects.”
Dodson explained from the stand that even though Leavitt stopped using Johnson’s Baby Powder about 20 years ago, her body could still have talc in it from the products, because once talc is inhaled, it can get “translocated” into the lymph system, where it’s stored.
