The lawyers at Schmidt & Clark, LLP, are investigating potential product liability lawsuits on behalf of men who suffered a stroke after using Bio-T-Gel, a widely-prescribed testosterone supplement. Potential cases are also being evaluated for children who were injured by secondary exposure to Bio-T-Gel, after coming into contact with the product on their father or other adult male. Symptoms of a Bio-T-Gel stroke tend to appear suddenly, and may include numbness or tingling in the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body), trouble speaking or understanding things, problems with walking or balance, or severe headaches that are different from past headaches.

What is Bio-T-Gel?
Approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in February 2012, Bio-T-Gel is a once-daily transdermal testosterone gel prescribed for the treatment of male hypogonadism, or low testosterone (Low T) levels. In most cases, a man’s testosterone level is determined to be clinically low if it is below about 300ng/dL. Low T affects upwards of 5 million men over the age of 39 in the United States, and causes symptoms including loss of libido/sexual function, lowered energy, increased body fat, osteoporosis, reduced muscle mass, and loss of body hair.
Bio-T-Gel Stroke Risk
In 2009, a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) involving 200 older men with a high prevalence of pre-existing heart disease was halted prematurely due to a high rate of heart attack among patients treated with testosterone supplements. Concerns about the potential Bio-T-Gel stroke risk were further raised in November of 2013, when a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association determined that males with a median age of 60 who underwent a coronary angiography procedure had a nearly 30% increased rate of stroke, heart attack and sudden death if they were administered Bio-T-Gel or other testosterone therapy product.
Then in January of 2014, a study published in PLOS ONE determined that the side effects of Bio-T-Gel and other similar products may double the risk of heart attack in men aged 65 or older. For younger males with a history of heart problems, the researchers indicated that these risks may be as much as tripled.
What are the Symptoms of a Stroke?
Strokes occur when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a specific region of the brain gets obstructed. Without oxygen, brain cells start to die within minutes. Bleeding in the brain may also cause a stroke if it damages brain cells. When brain cells die because of a stroke, symptoms manifest in parts of the body that those brain cells control. Bio-T-Gel stroke symptoms typically include:
- Sudden weakness
- Paralysis or numbness of the face, arms, or legs
- Trouble speaking or understanding speech
- Trouble seeing
A stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. If left untreated, a Bio-T-Gel stroke can lead to brain damage, long-term disability, and even sudden death. If you believe you may be having a stroke, call 9-1-1 right away. Do not drive yourself to the hospital or let someone else drive you. Call an ambulance so that emergency medical technicians can begin treatment on the way to the hospital. During a stroke, every minute counts.
Bio-T-Gel Side Effects
