Testosterone Supplement Heart Attack Risk

Men who use testosterone boosters like Bio-T-Gel may face an increased risk of heart attack and other serious side effects, according to the results of a new study. One TRT product, Androgel, warns on its labeling that side effects may include high blood pressure, blood clots, and “serious problems” for patients who have pre-existing heart, kidney or liver disease.

In recent months, lawyers have seen a dramatic increase in the number of claims from men who used Bio-T-Gel or other testosterone supplements in the wake of a November 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) which identified a link between testosterone and heart attack, stroke, blood clots and other serious side effects.

Testosterone therapy, which is only approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to treat men with clinically-diagnosed low or non-existent testosterone levels, has jumped to 432 million prescriptions in 2013 from 208 million in 2008. From 2000 to 2011, annual prescriptions for testosterone boosters increased more than fivefold. In 2011, the total number of prescriptions were nearly 5.5 million, equaling a market of approximately $1.6 billion.

Bio-T-Gel Heart Attack Study

While several medical studies have indicated that treating low testosterone (Low T) can help improve men’s sexual function, bone density, strength and muscle mass, the JAMA study mentioned above found that the risks outweigh the benefits. Researchers reported that testosterone users were 30% more likely to have a heart attack, stroke or die during a 3 year period compared to men with low T levels who did not undergo supplementation. The study’s 3,000 participants were an average of 60 years old, and most had other health problems including high blood pressure, cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.

Additionally, men who started the study with unobstructed coronary arteries were just as likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke, or die as those who had established coronary artery disease (CAD).

In 2009, researchers prematurely halted a trial of approximately 200 frail older men with pre-existing heart disease due to a high rate of heart attacks among the group treated with testosterone. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). According to an article published in the Wall Street Journal in Nov. 2013, additional research sponsored by NIH is investigating the effects of testosterone on walking ability, fatigue, sexual function, verbal memory, hemoglobin and plaque buildup in almost 800 men age 65 and older with Low T. The results are due to be released sometime next year.
