The Dangers of Swing Sets: Head Injuries to Children
At least 50,000 children in the U.S. go to the emergency room with injuries sustained on playground equipment each year, which equals out to about 137 children admitted to an ER each day, according to the CPSC.
Between Oct. 2000 and Sept. 2001, U.S. hospital emergency rooms reported that at least 8,250 children under the age of 2 were injured by playground equipment. Head and facial injuries in children using playground equipment made up 53% of all playground injuries seen in the emergency room. After falls from equipment, the 2nd most common incident was impact injuries or being struck by playground equipment that was being used by another child.
CPSC recommends that on home playground equipment which includes multiple play activities, such as a slide and swing set, the slide does not exit in front of the swing. Each piece of equipment should have at least 6 feet of play area around it, and one should separate active and quiet activities from each other.
