The hypertension drug Benicar (generic: olmesartan medoxomil) has been linked to a number of severe side effects, one of which is kidney failure. Benicar may cause this disease in certain users by elevating creatinine levels in the blood. This article discusses the various treatment options for Benicar users who develop kidney failure.

Kidney Failure and Treatment Options
Kidney failure can be a slow process and characteristic symptoms may not appear until the disease is in its later stages. Kidney failure, which is also known as end stage renal disease, occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to remove wastes and maintain electrolyte balance in the body. Without immediate medical treatment, this condition can result in death. The are two main treatments for kidney failure, dialysis and transplantation.
There are 2 different types of dialysis treatment: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. During these procedures, tubes connect the kidney failure patient to a machine that filters out the blood. Hemodialysis is typically performed 3 times per week for 3-4 hours per session. This is usually done at a dialysis center, although in some cases family members can be trained to do it at home. Hemodialysis patients must adhere to a strict diet, restrict their fluid intake, and may feel generally nauseated, especially after treatment.
Peritoneal dialysis uses the abdominal cavity membrane to filter out the blood. During peritoneal dialysis, a tube is permanently inserted into the abdomen. A fluid called dialysate is then injected into the abdominal cavity. Waste products and fluid move into the dialysate and after several hours, the fluid is drained out of the cavity. This is referred to as an “exchange.” Kidney failure patients can do four to five exchanges a day, or they may be done at night with a machine that cycles the exchanges while the patient is asleep.
Transplantation is the 3rd and final option for patients with kidney failure. During this procedure, a donated kidney is implanted into the lower abdominal area which replaces the function of the failing kidneys. In most cases, the patient’s own kidneys are left in place. Kidney transplant recipients must take prescription drugs for the life of the transplanted kidney to prevent it from being rejected by the body. Transplant patients must also follow strict schedules for lab testing and doctor appointments.
