Patients around the country have reported experiencing serious side effects after taking Benicar (olmesartan), a blood pressure medication. Although this drug is typically associated with sprue-like enteropathy, a number of Benicar users have also reported developing kidney failure. This article describes the long-term outlook (prognosis) for kidney failure patients.

Prognosis of Kidney Failure
Fully-functional kidneys are critical for the body because they process waste and toxins before they are transported to the bladder as urine. If the kidneys get damaged or begin to fail, they are unable to process this waste efficiently. This lack of function causes kidney failure, also known as end stage renal disease.
The cause of kidney failure significantly impacts a patient’s long-term prognosis. How fast kidney function declines depends on the underlying problem causing the kidney failure, and on how well it is managed. The following are some of the most commonly reported causes of renal failure:
- Poisons and trauma
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Glomerular diseases
- Genetic kidney diseases
- Olmesartan-containing blood pressure medications like Benicar
Chronic vs. Acute
Chronic kidney failure occurs gradually over months and even years, and is considered to be a “silent disease” since symptoms may not appear for a prolonged period of time. Irreversible kidney failure often results from this condition, and if left untreated it may result in death. There is also an increased risk of death from stroke or heart attack for patients with chronic kidney failure. In most cases, chronic kidney failure will continue to progress regardless of whether it is treated or not. However, there are a number of treatments available that may help slow progression of the disease and alleviate some symptoms.
When kidney damage occurs rapidly, within a matter of days or even hours, it is referred to as acute kidney failure. Patients with acute kidney failure may suffer complications including seizures, bleeding and/or coma. However, dialysis can help treat these complications. In many cases, if the cause is not the result of damage to the kidney tissue itself, the patient may be able to make a full recovery.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that regardless of what type of kidney failure a patient has, if left untreated it will almost always cause death. That’s why it’s crucial to be aware of kidney failure symptoms so you can call your physician at the first sign or trouble. Early diagnosis and treatment is key to a favorable long-term prognosis.
