What’s the problem?
October 28, 2015 – There are currently more than 1,100 lawsuits on the books alleging that Benicar caused enteropathy, a rare gastrointestinal disease that causes chronic diarrhea, malnutrition and severe weight loss. However, this number is expected to grow to as many as 4,000 before the litigation process is complete.
Benicar is classified as an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), which lowers the body’s blood pressure by helping to keep blood vessels dilated (open). The most serious side effect associated with the drug is sprue-like enteropathy, whose symptoms closely resemble those produced by celiac disease. Due to the similarity of the 2 conditions, enteropathy in Benicar users often goes undiagnosed, causing patients needless suffering for years.
By the time the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) finally acknowledged “clear evidence” of the link between Benicar and gastrointestinal side effects in 2013, the drug had been on the market for over a decade. Despite this, the agency has stated that Benicar’s potential benefits still outweigh its risks. In fact, more than 11 million prescriptions are still written for the drug each year in the U.S.
Benicar lawsuits allege that the medication is dangerous and poorly-designed, and that Daiichi failed issue adequate warnings about its potential risks. The upcoming cases will be heard by Judge Joel Schneider of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey in Camden.
