On July 3, 2013, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Benicar warning labels would be updated to include information about the risk of sprue-like enteropathy. According to the FDA, this gastrointestinal disease can cause symptoms which may include persistent diarrhea with significant weight loss. Sprue-like enteropathy may take months or even years to develop and may require emergency hospitalization, FDA said.

Mayo Clinic Study Links Benicar to Sprue-Like Enteropathy
Dr. Joseph Murray, a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist, was the first to discover the link between Benicar and enteropathy. Over the course of three years, Murray observed 22 Benicar users who were suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms commonly associated with celiac disease. Of these patients, 14 had symptoms so severe that emergency hospitalization was required.
Additionally, the individuals were unresponsive to a gluten-free diet, which is often used to relieve the symptoms of celiac disease, and tested negative for the disorder in blood tests. However, after quitting Benicar, all 22 patients’ gastrointestinal symptoms improved, and they gained back much of the weight they had lost. After observing these results, Dr. Murray determined that there was a link between Benicar and enteropathy, and his report has since been published in the online edition of Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
Benicar Side Effects
In addition to being linked to enteropathy, Benicar may also cause the following serious side effects in certain users:
- Chronic diarrhea
- Intestinal problems
- Acute kidney disease
- Kidney failure
- Bloody urine
- Muscle damage
- Irregular heartbeat
- High levels of uric acid in the blood
- Life-threatening allergic reactions
- Giant hives
- Low blood pressure
